What County Records Include

A public county record search can be a tool to help you locate and reconnect with family, friends, relatives and most anyone you know.

County records provide a wealth of information, such as:

  • A person's home and/or cell phone number, address, age, and birth date
  • Marriage records
  • Divorce decrees
  • Death records
  • Criminal records
  • Property information
  • Census
  • Taxes
  • Court records
  • Wills
  • Bonds

Quite often county records are referred to when an employer needs to do a background check on a potential employee. With the background check, the employee can verify past employment and any criminal activity. Apartment owners will often do background checks as well to see if there are any concerns, such as a person being a sex offender.

How to Search for Records

Depending on the type of records you're looking for, you might need to go to the County Court House and request to look at records. For example, if you're curious about the past residents of your home and how much the property has been assessed for over the years, you can find out this information at the Court House. If you've had generations of family members who lived in the area, county records are a great tool for a genealogy search.

When searching for a person's address or phone number, then going online for a search is the quickest and easiest way to obtain the information. Keep in mind that you won't always find what you're looking for. The online databases are constantly being updated, but information isn't always available.

Additional County Records

The types of county records that are available vary from state to state. The additional following records might be available in your county:

  • Citizenship records. These records will include alien, naturalization and citizenship of foreign-born individuals
  • Armed Forces discharges. A person can voluntarily choose to file with the register of deeds
  • Board Minutes. Minutes from the county board meetings, county health meetings, school meetings, and such are kept on file
  • Business names. Anytime a public building is used for a new purpose, it's kept on record. You might find it interesting to know how many different stores have used the same building over the years
  • County boundaries. Not sure which school district you live in, the county boundaries will help you out
  • Election records
  • Jury information
  • Lunacy records
  • Pension records
  • Road records. Information regarding road overseers, condition of roads, petitions for new roads and more can be obtained

Many County Court Houses also have miscellaneous records that could date back to the 1800's. There's a wealth of information readily available for your review.
